Poverty Top 5
I like where Gaurav is going with this. I agree completely with the contention that India is not a poor country as most people within and outside the country would have us believe! So, I am looking forward to the continuation of his discourse.
In my view, the 5 leading reasons for India’s pervasive poverty are,
1. Inequitable distribution of resources,
2. Absence of a reasonable buying power in most people,
3. Lack of sustained effort to generate the buying power through economic growth,
4. Lack of will to educate and train masses,
5. Dependence of people on State doles
But of course, not being an economics or a humanities student, I could be completely off the mark!

Yes, you are rather off the mark.
I have just one point.
Economic Freedom
Yazad >> I may be, yes. I do not deny. But you just gave me another reason for the continuing poverty… “Quick fixes”
I would think that the single biggest flaw is the complete lack of transparency in the system.
Is money being allocated. Yes
Is it reaching those who need it - no.
15 paise of every ruppee is supposed to go where it is meant to.
What is really working is ground level grass root capitalism. Self Help groups who are transforming communities. Its great stuff
Harini >> Long time no see out here! :)
I agree with what you say. Accountability/Transparency is the issue. I think the finance minister alluded to that in his outlay versus outcome remark. But the problem is that he merely alluded to it without defining a concrete step to address that issue.
Btw, that 15 paise statistic was in the times of Rajiv Gandhi. Nowadays, I am sure it has gone down since then!
