What does BMC use for surfacing the roads?!? … water-soluble tar?!??

Just over a week of rains has been experienced and most non-concretised roads in Mumbai are already competing with the surface of an asteroid!!!

Update: Even though I don’t see a good enough reason for doing so, I can accept that some small roads and lanes may develop potholes during the Mumbai rains. But when a high profile road like the Western Express Highway develops severe potholes that reduce the fast-moving highway traffic to a crawl, it is time to for the people to ask serious questions of the people responsible for these sort of situation. The MMRDA authorities claim that they had re-surfaced the road just to bring it to a safe state prior to the monsoon. But since I’ve been travelling regularly on that road, I can say that the road was in an infinitely better shape prior to the re-surfacing! … and would’ve survived the monsoon without needing any repairs! The potholes are merely on the newly laid surface. The old surface beneath is good enough! The pre-monsoon re-surfacing is a MMRDA scam to keep the contractors happy!! And it also manages to keep them happy coz the road needs further repairing once the potholes appear and people start complaining!!

Unless the people over at the recently launched Mumbai Mirror have just landed on earth after a really long stay in space, they should know what a blog is! Hell… the whole world and it’s dog knows about weblogs!!

The Bachchans started the journey from their Juhu bungalow Jalsa at 1.45 am and covered the 10 km stretch in about two hours without taking a single halt along the way.
Dozens of policemen and a few personal friends of the Bachchans followed in a convoy of cars.
Despite drizzles and periodic heavy showers, the Big B kept his cool and chanted Ganpati Bappa Moriya along with the hundreds of devotees.

Darn!! … Missed the spectacle!! ;-)

Oh bligh me! … second post of the day?!! Looking at my track record over the last two months, thats almost blasphemous!!

But then, I had to write about the June ‘05 Bloggers’ Meet that happened yesterday. First of all, let me make it amply clear that it technically wasn’t a Bloggers’ Meet at all! It was, as Sonia Faleiro rightly points out… a Mumbai Loggers Eet! And here’s photographic proof of the same!

And no… the photo doesn’t prove that coffee is bad for you!! ;-)

Once again… a great meet! Lots of laughter, conversations and leg-pulling this time around. Yazad was fixated on Amit’s long hair, which gave him very little time to expostulate on the uselessness of government controls! But the surprising footnote to this month’s meet was the fact that I actually spoke something at the meet!! ;-)

And I must thank Ravikiran for giving me a ride on the way back!

ICC thinks that the ‘radical’ changes it has ushered in yesterday, into the one-day format, are going to revolutionize the game. Well maybe they might!

And while traditionalists have cried out against the ‘radical’ nature of these changes, I’d like to think that ICC have left this pie half-baked!

For one, I thought that field restrictions for 20 overs loads the dice in the favour of the batsmen!… and mind you… the dice is already quite loaded in that direction! Thats why I feel ICC should’ve introduced something that could’ve favoured bowlers!

But mind you… having two blocks of 5 overs of fielding restrictions can be used imaginatively by the fielding captain… using one block just before the ’slog’ overs start… to lure the well-set batsmen into throwing away their wickets by going for the ‘big’ shots!

Also, the football-style substitution rule is a good innovation, but has the potential of making the toss, the most important factor in the game!

Moreover, the timing of these changes leave me with mixed feelings too! These are supposed to be experimental changes which would be reviewed after a year or so. With less than two years to go for the World Cup, most teams would like to build their teams and strategies, starting now! In case these changes are rolled back due to any sort of reasons, then we may have a situation wherein teams have to hastily rework their plans and strategies with just about 6-7 months left for the World Cup!! On the positive side, for India (and maybe Sri Lanka too!), these rule changes have come at just the right time, with new coaches just settling into their jobs. This would make it easier for Chappell, Moody and company to factor these changes into their plans right from the very start! And on a side note, having a foreign coach (generally receptive to new changes) would help the Indian team take these changes in their stride. We have seen, in Indian hockey, what happens when ex-Indian players acting as coaches stick to ‘traditional’ mindsets instead of embracing new ideas and innovations!

I would’ve also loved to see more of football rules coming into the ODI game. The concept of ‘yellow’ and ‘red’ cards for on-field transgressions/infringements by the players should’ve been tried out too!

Last but not the least, ICC has conveniently ignored certain key aspects of the game like the ‘chucking’ laws, the role of match referees, etc. while trying to mend what ain’t broken!!
