Mumbai Blast Help/Updates

[12th July 2006, 06:45 PM IST]

  • Just noticed this on Mumbai Help. Bhagwati Hospital in Borivali has an unidentified wounded person. The description is thus… 15-year-old male, dark complextion, has a previous burn mark on his upper left arm. He’s not too severely injured but is kept in the ICU. He’s unconscious. Please get in touch with the hospital in case anyone happens to recognize this description.

  • There has been a bumper crop of rumours today. Earlier in the day there was a rumour of a blast at Elphinstone Road, followed by a rumour of a blast at Borivali and also at Chembur. Needless to say, please do not believe in a piece of news unles it has been vetted reasonably beyond doubt. My tips for busting rumours:
  • Tune in. Check at least two or three news channels on TV to get a confirmation.
  • If you do not have access to a TV, call someone who may have access. Folks at home , for example. Get them to confirm the news for you.
  • If phones are jammed due to network congestion and you cannot get through to anyone, tune in to any of the FM channels. If the news is true, at least one of the FM stations will be broadcasting the news at any given time.
  • If you hear only songs on the FM channels for a good amount of time, chances are that the piece of news is just a rumour.
  • If you still want to confirm it, call up a radio channel or send a SMS to them asking them to confirm. Be assured that a RJ will come on air immediately after your query reaches them. They will either confirm or bunk the piece of news.
  • You will notice that I haven’t mentioned anything about calling the emergency helpline numbers. You can do that of course. But I prefer to confirm/deny rumours by these methods first. Emergency helplines will invariably be clogged in times of crises. This is just a way to take some load off those helplines.

  • Tight security at railway stations. Metal detectors and sniffer dogs deployed at key stations.
  • Updated link for the official list of dead and injured (maintained by Mumbai Police) is available here.
  • According to the latest reports, around 56 dead bodies (out of the total 183) have not been identified yet. While only 72 of the identified ones have been handed over to the next of kin. This information may have changed on the ground since the figures were put up by Mumbai Police almost 5 hours ago.
  • Even though the Mumbai airport is on a high alert, air services are not affected at all.
  • No word yet on the type of explosive used in the blasts.
  • At least one newspaper (DNA) reported that one person had approached the police with information that he had overheard a group of Pathani-attired persons speak about meeting up in Malad after leaving the parcels in the trains. Apparently, these parcels were gift-wrapped boxes. (I remember reading this piece of news in a hurry this morning before I left home for work. Now I cannot access the DNA site due to some reason. So I cannot provide a link to the report.)
  • As always, keep referring to Mumbai Help.

  • Western Railway local services have been up and running since this morning, at least the slow trains. The local trains were running 15-20 minutes late with the delays expected to progressively reduce as the day progressed.
  • Long distance services of WR are affected too. Most of the long distance trains will depart on time. Others may be late or cancelled. For details of WR long distance services, please check here
  • Western Railway helpline numbers are 022-23004000, 022-23014373.
  • Mumbai Police have released the official list of people who are either dead or injured in yesterday’s blasts. As of 09:06 AM IST, the count is 183 dead and 714 injured. The list can be found here, categorised according to hospitals. At the time of making this post, however, the count of fatalities has gone up to 190 according to Rediff and IBNLive.
  • Police helpline numbers are 1090, 103, 100, 022-22653054, 022-2264-1752, 022-2264-1753, 022-2262-1855, 022-6451-3333, 022-6451-4444,022-6451-5555.
  • Keep checking for updates either here or at the awesome Mumbai Help blog.

Amit >> Your frustration is apparent. And your comment and anger are understood. However I guess that frustration and anger like this gives rise to extremist tendencies. Some people take refuge in escapism. Others would rebel and turn terrorists. Something to reflect on, isn’t it?

Many talk about the spirit in Mumbai, no doubt people helped each other in every possible way. After the attack, the next day people started going through the same routine, traveling by trains, and so everyone said that’s the spirit of Mumbai, we move on no matter what. But that’s not the reason; most of the people move on because there is no other option, you have to travel by trains. They go because they don’t want to get fired. It’s just competition. People can’t wait to take a moment’s breath.

You think if the Govt had declared the next day as a holiday, how many would have even dared to travel? Life is precious for all of us. It’s just that normal ordinary people cannot do anything and are completely helpless.

I know India is a huge country with a huge population but days have passed, our PM has given a goody goody speech. How long will it take? There is still no concrete proof as to who are behind these horrendous attacks. The world says India is a peaceful country. To keep this external image we do not carry out any attacks, instead we practice peaceful negotiations, endless hopeless meetings, talks and debates and get nowhere. It is about time the Government should consider action. It’s of no use if we have our army protecting our country’s border when the enemy is already inside.

I hope this makes sense and I am sorry if I have been rude in any manner.
